Any electrical engineers out there?

I bought a large hammer drill from Lidl under the Parkside brand. Yes I know they're cheap - but some of their tools have seen good service.

This one made an excessive amount of sparking at the armature from the minute I started it and I could smell the carbon. I thought maybe the brushes were bedding-in but within 20 minutes use it stopped. I dismantled it and found the brushes completely worn out!

Is there any technical explanation for this occurance, as the only parts that seem in poor shape are the brushes themselves, everything else look fine. I'm not that bothered, I'm more intrigued than worried, but it seems strange on an otherwise sound looking tool.
