BT software challenges BBC's Match of the Day

BT's digital television service, BT Vision, due to launch later this year, could include revolutionary software which automatically selects the most exciting points within a football match.

The Independent said the software—developed by the telco—selects portions of a game based on audio levels, motion on the pitch, the number of camera angles seen, and the level of excitement of the commentator.

According to The Independent in a test of the software during England's World Cup clashes against Sweden and Ecuador BT's technology matched highlights selected by the BBC for its Match of the Day in every way.

BT researcher David Chatting said: "It doesn't understand the offside rule but it is very accurate. It is a kind of heartbeat of the match, producing a graph of how 'interesting' each moment is."
