After a row with an overseer, during which he accidentally kills him, Bill, Linda and Bill's lover Abby take off for Texas, where they are hired, along with other migrant workers, to help with the wheat harvest. There they discover that the rural life is just as bleak as working in an industrial environment, but there appears to be a chance for an escape from their drudgery when a wealthy but ailing landowner falls for Abby. Bill urges her to marry the sick man, since he has "only a year to live", but the liaison works out very differently from what he expects and ends in tragedy...

Nigel Stock plays an eccentric teacher at the school; he played Watson in the 1960s BBC TV series.
